Lectionary and Liturgical Books Released at the 32nd Plenary Assembly of The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India ( CCBI ) at The Pope Paul VI Auditorium – St. John’s Research Institute, St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, 100 Feet Road, Koramangala, Bangalore.

On the historic occasion of the release, His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias offered a prayer and in his address told the audience, “This new Lectionary is an invitation for each of us to deepen our understanding of the Word of God and thereby participate in the liturgy actively, fully and consciously, lifting ourselves up to the Lord.  It is a sacred moment; It is the beginning of a new revitalization of our spirituality.”

His Eminence said The launch of the three volume Lectionary based on the English Standard Version Catholic Edition (ESVCE) approved for use in the Dioceses of India by CCBI,  is the fruit of the work  of our experts at CCBI, Nigel Fernandes and all those involved  who have  great commitment, passion, and love for the Word of God.

“Querida Amazonia – Beloved Amazon Apostolic Exhortation” by Pope Francis was released just last week in Rome and the release of this book happening today is like a miracle, to get it published and printed in such a short time, in less than two days.

“The publication of the new lectionary by the CCB is a landmark in the history of the Church in our country, it is a valuable contribution of the Church in India to the Universal Church testifying to our biblical scholarship and liturgical competence” said Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrão, the Archbishop of Goa and Daman and President of the CCBI. “I thank Nigel Fernandes for having left no stone unturned in publishing the Lectionary as planned also Brilliant Printers for their special role in printing this Lectionary” he added.

His Excellency, Most Rev. Giambattista Diquattro, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal expressed his joy on the August occasion and said that these Books would be a great way in spreading the Word of God.

Dr Ayres Fernandes, Executive Secretary to the CCBI Commission on Liturgy, welcomed the guests and gave a background on the production of the Lectionary where the first meeting was held on 4th April 2016. The Lectionary has been prepared in accordance with the Ordo Lectionum Missae, Editio Typica Altera and according to the Indian Liturgical Calendar, incorporating special readings for Solemnities, Feasts and Memorials of the Indian Saints and Votive Masses for our country.  He thanked Nigel Fernandes and said in his address, “Nigel was a guiding force and was there for all the meetings, taking minutes, planning for the meetings and interacting with Crossway on behalf of CCBI. He and his team at ATC have worked tirelessly, and he loves the church.

The Church in India will begin to officially use this Lectionary in the liturgical celebrations from April 5, 2020, Palm Sunday.

Also on this occasion, 4 other important books were released to mark the occasion – Book of The Gospels, Order of Confirmation, Order of Celebrating Marriage, and the fourth book –   The Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis – Beloved Amazon that includes The Amazon: New Paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology.

Present on this Occasion were also, Most Rev. George Antonysamy, Vice President, CCBI & Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, Most Rev. Anil Couto, Secretary General CCBI & Archbishop of Delhi, Most Rev Peter Paul Saldanha, newly elected Chairman CCBI Commission for Liturgy Anthony Gosling, Chief Operating Officer, Crossway Publishers, Wheaton Illinois, Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of CCBI, Rev. Dr Ayres Fernandes, Executive Secretary to the CCBI Commission on Liturgy, CCBI executive secretaries, the Bishops of the Latin rite,  Mr. Peter Purdue, Consultant on the project, who was also responsible for the Book Layout and Cover Design of the books and Fr. Lawrence Noronha, Mrs Brenda Fernandes and the ATC Staff.

Rev. Dr. Assisi Saldanha, C.Ss.R Scripture Scholar, compered the programme.  Rev Dr Saldanha played a major role along with Rev Dr. Legrand and a team of Scholars in preparing of the ESV Catholic Edition Holy Bible.  Rev Dr. Assisi contribution to the preparation of the Lectionary was also immense.

Mr Ivan Fernandes, Mr Peter Anil Rego and other Directors of Brilliant Printers were also present. Nigel Fernandes, CEO of ATC Publishers proposed the Vote of Thanks.
