Description

In the clutch of surviving writings from the New Testament dawn, these exquisitely rare 41 pieces of psalmic poetry were ‘re-discovered’ for what they were – probably early 2C processional prayer-chants – only in 1909. They are associated with the Wisdom tradition of Solomon, but scholars have laboured to work out where, and by whom, and in what language they were composed – New Testament Greek or Syriac, cousin of the Aramaic of Jesus. Some, mostly academic, translations are available in the West. However, this translation is by an Indian Cistercian monk, a first, and beautifully presented layout for personal or communal mediation or lectio divina, with cloth binding and markers. His commentaries, as reflections through living their spirituality, are appendixed as supplements. The Odes text is interspersed with nine newly commissioned black and white ‘woodcut-type’ Illuminations by painter-theologian Jyoti Sahi with his own reflections appendixed. A ‘concise’ Paperback version is listed separately.
