Description
The call to holiness is for everyone. However, in the history of the Church, the vast majority of saints are from the ranks of religious men and women. Against this background, the canonization of the first married lay martyr from our land is a very significant landmark, particularly in the history of the Church in India.
Devasahayam was a fervent Catholic layman and a devoted missionary who was martyred. As much as his Christian witness is important for the Universal Church, his zeal, courage and forbearance are a great source of fortitude and solace to the defenceless millions who are still suffering persecution for their faith in different parts of the world. Devasahayam embraced Christianity at a time when casteism and slavery were very prevalent. His faith in Jesus Christ helped him to see humanity as one family. He not only believed in this equality of human persons created in the image of God, but he also put this faith into practice by treating all people equally. This martyrdom shows how significant the role of the laity in the mission of the Church is. The laity is not just “only belonging to the Church”, indeed “they are the Church”. Devasahayam, a beacon for lay missionaries today.
