According to recent news reports, a new biopic on the life of Saint Mother Teresa is in the works. There is no other saint more well-known around the world than Mother Teresa. Her devotion to the care of the poor and the sick in Calcutta is so widely documented and acknowledged that she was chosen as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize back in 1979 for her relentless efforts to alleviate poverty and suffering around the world.

Her legacy continues to inspire

Over the years, Mother Teresa’s fame for her works of charity has attracted the attention of both admirers and detractors. One of her famous detractors was author Christopher Hitchens, who criticised the fact that the patients at her Missionaries of Charity were often not offered painkillers, surgeries, etc. However, he failed to mention the fact most of these patients suffering from Leprosy were abandoned by their relatives on the streets because of the extreme stigma associated with the disease.

The Missionaries of Charity could not afford to provide expensive painkillers and surgeries for all of them. They tried to provide the best they could with the limited resources collected from their donors and patrons. In fact, the Catholic Church is by far the largest non-government organisation in the world providing charitable, hospital, and educational services because of the works of great souls like Mother Teresa. No other organisation comes even close.

What we know so far about the upcoming biopic

The Director Teona Strugar Mitevska has announced the project with the title ‘Mother’ with the Swedish actress Noomi Roopace playing the role of the Saint. The work on the project is expected to start sometime this year. It is worth mentioning here that the Director also hails from Skopje, North Macedonia, the birthplace of Mother Teresa. She has previously worked on a documentary on the Saint, which inspired her to consider the possibility of making the biopic.

Rather than retelling the entire life story of Mother Teresa, they will be focusing on the events leading up to her decision to form her religious order, the Missionaries of Charity. The release of the movie is expected to happen sometime in 2026.
