Description
The twenty-first century is often referred to as the ‘Century of Ecclesiology’. The Eucharistic theology undoubtedly constitutes one of the most important ecclesiological trends of the past and present centuries. The principal aim of “A Nourishing Meal for the Church” is to present the meal dimension of the Eucharist in an ecclesial context. Christ instituted the Eucharist in the context of a meal at the Last Supper (Mk 14:22-26), and thus the meal became the existential aspect of the Eucharistic celebration. This book primarily reflects on the meal dimension of the Eucharist from biblical, theological and contextual perspectives according to the contemporary trends of the Church. This book presents inclusiveness and universality as the unique characteristics of the Eucharistic celebration. It emphasizes the aspect of bringing believers together from different walks of life under the banner of table fellowship, inviting them to serve one another. Another important theme focused on in this book is that of the Eucharistic meal which sustains and strengthens Christian communities by providing food from time to time as Christ sacrificed himself and gave us his Body and Blood for our spiritual nourishment. Through this nourishment, one needs to undergo such a transfiguration that each of us is another Christ to one’s neighbour, especially to those in need of salvation. This book also emphasizes that no Christian community can exist without nourishing itself by the celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist. It is the finest mode of Christian worship and the greatest treasure to build the Church. The Church needs to become an intensive Eucharistic community as wanted by Christ and practised in the early Church. Such a Eucharistic community is needed to squarely meet the new challenges that the Church faces today. As the Second Vatican Council aimed at a radical renewal of all aspects of the Christian life, one has to return to the roots of Christian life. One needs to return to the first form of the Eucharistic celebration, that is the meal, to have a meaningful celebration in the present situation of the Church, 2000 years after the first celebration of the Eucharist.
